Ruthie hensall
A highly-regarded West End star and solo artist with an impressive vocal range and distinctive style.
When a legend such as Larry Adler compares a singer favourably with Ethel Merman and then Mickey Rooney speaks of that singer in the same breath as Judy Garland, you know to expect a quality act.
But such accolades are far from unusual for the artist in question, Ruthie Henshall, who has had theatre critics eating out of her hand since her London West End debut in Cats in 1988, followed by a string of hit performances, including Crazy For You which won her an Olivier Award.
And, as she is managed by Jonathan Shalit - who was behind Larry Adler's Glory Of Gershwin, which reached number two in the albums chart and sold 750,000 units worldwide - Henshall could soon attract an audience beyond the musical fraternity. Shalit is convinced that he has found a gap in the market: that is, he says, quality material, sung by a quality artist, but, crucially, by a performer of universal appeal. "A lot of West End performers are for the intelligentsia and are quite pretentious, but Ruthie is a Bromley girl-made-good and has never stopped being that. She knows where she comes from," he says.
With the full power of promotion behind Henshall, Shalit is confident she can follow artists such as Elaine Paige by going from the West End stage to solo singing stardom.
While Henshall has not turned her back on her West End career, the fact she has rejected a string of stage parts since quitting Oliver shows how far she thinks she can take her solo career.
